BUILDING EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION WITHIN THE FAMILY

Digital distractions are everywhere, and sadly, they’re sneaking right into the four walls of our homes, replacing physical conversations and family bonding.

Tunde sat at the dining table, his food growing cold before him. His mother asked how his day went. “Fine,” he said, his eyes staying glued to the glowing screen in his hands.

Frustrated, she snatched the phone away.

“No phones on my dining table,” she snapped, walking off. Then, raising her voice so he could hear clearly, she added:

“Your obsession with these devices needs to be checked. Let me see how you will survive one whole week without pressing this phone!”

Perhaps you’ve witnessed this in your own home, or maybe you’ve even been the “Tunde” in the story. You sit down to eat together every day, you live under the same roof, yet you hardly hear one another’s voices. Instead of bonding, everyone is glued to their phones, tablets, laptops, or other digital devices.

Little by little, digital distractions leave cracks that weaken the bond God designed for us to enjoy as a family.

Nowadays, ChatGPT is replacing in-person human friendships and communication because, with a few clicks, you can get what you want without being judged, yelled at, or condemned. There are many AI assistants now, not just with specialised tasks but also taking over parenting, counselling, and even romantic relationships with partners. Places and things we need human and emotional connections for are gradually being replaced by screens and clicks. People tend to talk more to their AI assistants than they do to their physical partners. A programmed machine may seem to perform better than humans, but that is not the case. As great as these inventions are, they will never replace the human connection we all need.

The question is, why is communication drifting from face-to-face to face-to-screens?

Just as in every other kind of relationship, effective communication is essential within the family to foster peace, unity, love, and a strong bond. Whether you are a parent, a child, or a sibling, you want to be heard and seen. This becomes possible only when the right communication tools are applied.

What should you do to save your home?

1. Create an atmosphere where everyone’s voice is valued

It is important that no one feels silenced, ignored, or considered less important. Every opinion may not always be acted upon, but every opinion deserves to be heard. When family members know that their voices matter, they are more open to sharing, more willing to listen, and more ready to build stronger bonds of love and understanding.

2. Pay active attention when communicating

Active attention means listening with your eyes, ears, and heart. When your child asks a question or makes a comment, take time to understand the intent behind the message, not just the words. This helps them feel valued, strengthens trust, and makes communication more meaningful. Being “swift to hear, slow to speak, and slow to wrath” (James 1:19) is a Biblical wisdom principle that never fails.

3. Quality Time

Setting aside moments to eat together, take walks, or simply talk without phones or gadgets fosters deeper connections. The more intentional time you share, the easier and more natural it is. We are also admonished by the scriptures to “…redeem the time because the days are evil.” – Eph. 5:16

4. Conflict Resolution

In every relationship, including the family, conflicts are inevitable. What makes the difference is how they are handled. It requires patience, humility, and a willingness to listen. Instead of focusing on who is right or wrong, the goal should be to understand each other and restore peace. The Bible also says in Proverbs 10.12 – “Hatred stirreth up strifes: but love covereth all sins.”

Don’t forget: the family is the first and primary institution of society. When communication breaks down in the home, it eventually reflects in society as a whole. However, when we foster healthy communication within our families, we not only strengthen our homes; we also raise generations that understand and value peace, unity, and love.
